Mischa Barton was just put under psychiatric hold, and while I would have found this shocking in her pre-OC Lawn Dogs days, it just isn't that shocking. In the wake of Michael Jackson's death it has become all too clear that health and Hollywood just don't mix.
Part of the problem is the industry's medical nepotism. The doctor who prescribed Jackson his plethora of pills was, in fact, Liz Taylor's physician. And why would Jacko not trust one of his idols and closest friends? Yet, despite the fact that they get around, these Hollywood docs don't seem to be particularly effective at their jobs. Heath Ledger, Anna Nicole Smith and Michael Jackson were all found with numerous prescriptions (many of the drugs having conflicting effects) and bloodwork that read like a pharmacy manual. Clearly, if an actor wants a drug, they have plenty of docs at their disposal to give it to them.
The other problem is the perennial myth in Hollywood that all stars have perfect lives. Unfortunately, Tinseltown is just a cross-section of the world, a place in which you will be hard-pressed to find someone who has not suffered from bouts of anxiety, sadness and self-loathing (yes, even Angelina Jolie has experienced these). Yet Hollywoodites can't seem to grasp that these feelings are normal! The number of times celebs have been hospitalized for "exhaustion" is shocking considering the rest of us simply get in a hot bath to unwind.
People like Mischa Barton need to understand that it's OK not to feel 110 per cent all of the time. It would also help if she went outside the Hollywood sphere to get medical attention. But then, how would she ensure that the tabloids covered her recuperation? The dilemmas just keep on coming.
